What do Tomb Raider, Just Cause, Kingdom Hearts and Life is Strange have in common? Aside from a huge player base and worldwide success, they also have the same creator, the Square Enix development studio. Why are we talking about this? Well, the said studio has recently expressed its interest in the DGaming industry and its driving technology, the blockchain.

Ubisoft, Sony, Microsoft, ConsenSys; all of these companies are already exploring the benefits of blockchain technology. The latest addition to this list is Square Enix, a gaming giant and the creator of numerous highly successful gaming titles, including Tomb Raider, Just Cause and Final Fantasy.

In his New Year’s Letter to investors, the president of Square Enix Yosuke Matsuda said that the interest in blockchain technology has far expanded past cryptocurrency. It has spread to other non-crypto sectors and has found a strong foothold in the gaming sector. Matsuda also expressed the company's interests in game streaming services.

The company believes that game streaming services will play a key role in game sales and digital content adoption and consumption. Matsuda noted that exploring these two, the blockchain technology and game streaming is the key to future growth.

How Can Blockchain Reach The Mainstream?

In September 2018, big gaming companies like Ubisoft, ConsenSys, Enjin, and EverdreamSoft forged the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA). The BGA's goal is to act as a bridge between the DGaming and traditional gaming industries. Additionally, the BGA also aims to bring game developers together in order to set standards and provide solutions to the challenges posed by both sectors.

The 3 biggest challenges are:

  1. Attracting investors - the benefits of the blockchain technology are often difficult to explain, which may repel investors.
  2. Developing standards - the DGaming industry is still in its infancy, meaning that it needs to set clear standards, resolve regulatory issues and develop best practices.
  3. Mainstream adoption - blockchain games are still far too complex for casual gamers, for they don't follow the "download, install & play” mantra seen in the traditional gaming industry.

Square Enix's Role In DGaming Industry

Square Enix could play a vital role in the DGaming industry. The company has expressed its desire to explore the application of blockchain technology in both the gaming and streaming industry.

Square Enix is impressed with the way many gaming studios integrated blockchain technology with gaming, particularly when it comes to asset ownership and monetization. It's still hard to tell whether Square Enix will follow the road of Ubisoft and join forces with other major gaming companies. But the interest is there; we just have to wait and see what Square Enix will bring to the DGaming industry.
