The closed beta release of Decentraland's World Explorer is rapidly approaching! Decentraland is making all the preparations for the closed beta, and will soon start inviting beta testers to see the World Explorer in its full glory.
The Road So Far
It's been a year and a half since Decentraland's First Land auction. The districts were formed, Land bought, and the Landowners began building. Then came the Second Land auction, through which Decentraland sold most of its Land parcels.
While all this was going on, the team worked hard on developing and adding all sorts of technical and creative features to its platform. This includes the Builder, SDK, Picture-Frame technology, governance system, and more. And just recently, Decentraland shifted from Babylon to Unity, which significantly improved the performance of its scenes and opened a door to new opportunities and challenges.
Overcoming What Others Don't Have To
Most virtual 3D platforms don't have to combat the problems Decentraland did. For starters, while most platforms pre-load the assets they render, Decentraland allows its users to upload unique content, and this content cannot be pre-loaded, but rather downloaded by the players and generated as they move through the World. Bear in mind that Decentraland has roughly 90,000 parcels and potentially terabytes and terabytes of unique content.
Consequently, the Decentraland team had to put a lot of effort to allow its users to upload/download their unique content without compromising the performance. The work isn't done yet, but Decentraland achieved the goals its set for itself thus far. It's needless to say that Decentraland wouldn't achieve these results without the help of its community members, who provided valuable feedback and proposed solutions that directly shaped the course of actions of the developers.
The Potential Is Obvious
Many gaming titles and individuals believe in Decentrland. Chainbreakers and Battle Racers are a testament to that; Battle Racers raised roughly 600 ETH through its presale, and Chainbreakers $130,000. But how? And perhaps more importantly, why?
What others can learn from Decentraland is the platform's emphasis on empowering its content creators. You can use the Builder to develop beautiful scenes, SDK to develop a unique experience. These and many other tools allow you to develop fully interactive scenes in the World Explorer that users will want to visit.
Most importantly, you can monetize all of these examples in numerous ways. In the grand scheme of things, Decentraland wants to develop a platform that can support a fully liquid market, where users trade, buy, sell, exchange, and tax however they want.
What The Future Holds
Developing, tweaking, bug fixing and polishing the World Explorer took a lot of time and energy from the team. And now, when much of the hard work has been completed, the team can deliver new content, rapidly.
Throughout July, Decentraland will privately invite users to test the World Explorer. Those who join will see the full beauty of the World and help find and fix bugs. Once this is done, Decentraland will start adding Avatars and allow everyone to join the World Explorer.
